Soul Asylum vocalist and guitarist Dave Pirner, says that making their twelfth studio full-length, Hurry Up And Wait, was a completely seamless, enjoyable, and productive experience. The album was co-produced with John Fields—and recorded at Minneapolis’ Nicollet Studios, the same place where the celebrated rock band recorded seminal early albums released on Twin/Tone Records—the album reflects Soul Asylum’s usual eclectic approach.

Lyrically, songs dive into topics such as grappling with emotional and geographic disconnection, navigating romantic ebbs and flows, and the power of embracing optimism despite it all. Sonically, Hurry Up And Wait features thrashing songs indebted to punk (“Hopped Up Feelin’”) and classic rock (“Got It Pretty Good”), folk-influenced pop-rock (“Silly Things”), and gorgeous jangle-pop (lead single “If I Told You.”)

lyrics

Don’t you ever wanna leave me alone?
Don’t you ever wanna watch my back?
Can’t you ever even leave it alone?
You don’t ever wanna walk my path

You never see me when I’m keeping it together
You only see me when I’m falling apart
Got a feeling, a hopped up feeling
It aint worth stealin’ cause I’m givin’ it away to everyone

Are you ever gonna leave it at home?
Would you ever make me swallow my pride?
Would you ever try to spit me out?
Would you ever stop and wonder why?

I could see it if we never got together
I would never find my place in the sun
Got a feeling, a hopped up feeling
It aint worth stealin’ cause I’m givin’ it away to everyone

Drugs are a substitute for love
And love is a substitute for
Nothing at all
And drugs are a substitute for love
And love is a substitute for nothing at all
Nothing at all

Nothing’s going to come between us now
Nothing’s going to make me change my mind
If I never ever see you again
Nothing’s ever going to take away my good time

You never see me when I’m keeping it together
You only see me when I’m falling apart
Got a feeling, a hopped up feeling
It ain’t worth stealin’ cuz I’m givin’ it away to everyone

Got a feeling, a hopped up feeling
Got a feeling, a hopped up feeling
Got a feeling, a hopped up feeling
Got a feeling, a hopped up feeling
Got a feeling, a hopped up feeling
Got a feeling, a hopped up feeling
