Soul Asylum vocalist and guitarist Dave Pirner, says that making their twelfth studio full-length, Hurry Up And Wait, was a completely seamless, enjoyable, and productive experience. The album was co-produced with John Fields—and recorded at Minneapolis’ Nicollet Studios, the same place where the celebrated rock band recorded seminal early albums released on Twin/Tone Records—the album reflects Soul Asylum’s usual eclectic approach.

Lyrically, songs dive into topics such as grappling with emotional and geographic disconnection, navigating romantic ebbs and flows, and the power of embracing optimism despite it all. Sonically, Hurry Up And Wait features thrashing songs indebted to punk (“Hopped Up Feelin’”) and classic rock (“Got It Pretty Good”), folk-influenced pop-rock (“Silly Things”), and gorgeous jangle-pop (lead single “If I Told You.”)

Everyone’s waiting to see if you’re coming outta your shell for a while Cupid and Casper were asking about ya You used to be so wild I know how it is you get drunk at a party It seems there’s someone you should call Then the cycle begins; you decide to stay in You don’t talk to anyone at all Never know what you might find You never know what you leave behind This is the beginning of a great adventure Now’s not the time, not the time to step aside I’ve had my share of missteps and delusions Head-trips and tales that are tall Every conclusion is better than never Happily, after all You dig yourself out of the tangled up barbed wire Fightin’ over every wall And then you get over; you pull yourself up You pull yourself up by the straps of your overalls Never know what you might find You never know what you leave behind This is the beginning of a great adventure Leavin’ with you, leavin’ with you, leavin’ with you This is the beginning of a great adventure Now’s not the time, not the time to leave it behind I’m right behind you Behind you all the way And when I find you We’ll be on our way Everyone’s waiting to see if you’re coming Out of your shell for a while Cupid and Casper were asking about you You used to be so wild And this is the beginning of a great adventure Now’s not the time, not the time to step aside This is the beginning of a great adventure Now’s not the time, not the time to leave it behind Do do do do do do do do do do do do Leavin’ with you, leavin’ with you, leavin’ with you (Do do do do do do do do do do do do) I’m leavin’ with you, leavin’ with you, leavin’ with you (Do do do do do do do do do do do do) Leavin’ with you, leavin’ with you, leavin’ with you

If I asked for forgiveness, Does it mean that I did it? Is it really that bad; am I that hard to live with? If I told you I loved you, Would you hold it against me? I’ve seen every shade of gray I can’t wait another day For summer to come I miss the sun It’s something that I try to overcome If I walked to the corner, Would you put up a red light? Would you hold it against me, if it didn’t turn out right? Please don’t make me say it I would never regret it If I told you I loved you, would you let me forget it? I’ve seen every shade of gray The clouds just seem to come my way Come rain or come shine I miss the sun Everyday is someday will come Don’t you know that I miss the sun? Lie and wait for summer to come I know that you’re busy Don’t hold it against me If I told you I loved you, would you hold it against me? I miss the sun Everyday is someday will come Don’t you know that I miss the sun? I miss my son If I told you I loved you, Would you hold it against me?

Woah oh oh oh Up the river without a raft You’ve done your worst with your better half You better think of something fast You better, you better make her laugh Well it’s after hours at the break of dawn You’ve made your bed all day long I must be doing something wrong Are those tears of joy or are you just cryin’? Just when you think you’ve had enough And you’re tired of tryin’ to suck it up I know you can make her laugh Like a child on a carnival ride Laugh that mascara right off her eyes And she’s walkin’ away, just give it one more try I know you can, you can make her laugh Well you can leave when you want But please leave us laughing Leave us wondering what the fuck just happened Your ironic cynical sarcastic sense of humor’s Got me wondering, if I ever had a chance You know you can’t make her love you But you sure can make her cry You can’t make her make, make up her mind Just when you think you’ve had enough And you’re tired of tryin’ to suck it up I know you can make her laugh Like a child on a carnival ride The mascara right off her eyes And she’s walkin’ away, give it one more try I know you can, you can make her laugh And I’m bombin’ tonight Crickets fill the sky I’m dyin’ on the vine When I see you smile again Well I can make her laugh Now I’m first in line for the last word now None of the sadness or madness has yet to die down There’s nothing left to do but laugh out loud It was all just a joke anyhow So, make her laugh Like a child on a carnival ride (make her laugh) Laugh that mascara right off her eyes (make her laugh) As she’s walking away, just give it one more try I know you can, you can make her laugh Make her laugh Make her laugh Make her laugh I know you can, you can make her laugh

What’s wrong with this? What’s wrong with this? She’s so easy Her signals always busy She holds the rights to women Exclusively She’s the one, she’s the one that you’ll never be You know that you want to, want to, want to, want to, want to You know that I want to, want to, want to, want to, want to You know that you- What’s wrong with this telephone? This telephone used to work fine What’s wrong with this telephone? Some telephone better than mine What’s wrong with this telephone? What’s, what’s wrong with this telephone? What’s, what’s wrong with this? What’s wrong with this? What’s wrong with this? What’s wrong with this? Please go easy Please go easy on me The ocean tracks a river Deliver me To a place where I belong You know that you want to, want to, want to, want to, want to You know that I want to, want to, want to, want to, want to You know that you- What’s wrong with this Internet? This Internet used to work fine What’s wrong with this picture? This picture used to be mine What’s wrong with this telephone? What’s, what’s wrong with this telephone? What’s, what’s wrong with this? What’s wrong with this? What’s wrong with this? What’s wrong with this?

When I was younger I thought I would die Now I’m a little bit older I still go out at night Need someone to talk to Hope I say something right I go home alone A social butterfly I’m gonna come outta my coma Gonna try to make things right Stay out all night, tryin’ to get a bite Like a social butterfly Now I’m just like a moth Flyin’ into the fire And I fly by night Lookin’ for the nearest light I saw you at the party And we got in a fight And now I miss you like Yellow to the color blind And I’m comin’ outta my coma I’m gonna come out tonight Lookin’ for a little reaction I’m like a social butterfly If I could do What I wanna do with you I’d crawl right back Into my cocoon You know I’m gonna come outta my coma I’m gonna set the night on fire I’ll see you there Don’t be square You’re a social butterfly Like a social butterfly A social butterfly

Dead Letter 03:05
Dead Letter, dead Letter Of immaculate intention It’s written in blood That flows through the pen tip Dead letter, dead letter Never to deliver The message of love I wanted to give her She sent a dead letter To the book on the shelf She revealed some secrets She didn’t want to tell She died on the day That her baby was born And the dead letter rests In the used bookstore Dead letter, dead letter Addressed straight to hell It’s written to someone It’s written quite well Dead letter, dead letter Would never be read Oh, I’ll write you a letter As long as it’s dead There was no response And they thought they had lost him From drugging and drinking cough syrup When the caught up with him He just sat on the floor In a pile of dead letters He just couldn’t finish Dead letter, dead letter Addressed to you It says that I’m sorry Explains the whole truth For I sent it to you So long ago I thought that you got it I just didn’t know

Landmines 03:14
Well call me on my landline I ain’t gonna answer I can’t talk to robots I can’t take those chances A landline’s better than a landmine I guess I’ll take my chances You’ll find the bodies buried Right on down the road Right between the landmines Ready to explode Landlords and lawyers on the front line Stompin’ on those landmines So, watch where you walk Tread light You better watch your step One step at a time You’re walkin’ through that field of landmines Your papa was a preacher Your mama was a dancer You never know They’re pretty old They might have the answer Left a slice out last night Might be right where the ants were Eggshells and earthquakes Crackin’ under foot You never know When she might blow The devil’s on the loose The telephone is ringin’ I don’t need bad news So, watch where you walk Tread light You better watch your step One step at a time When you’re walkin’ through a field of landmines Well a landline’s better than a landmine This much I know So, call me on my landline I don’t have a phone A landline’s better than a landmine That’s one thing fosho So, watch where you walk Tread light Watch your step One step at a time You’re walkin’ through a field of landmines (landmines)

I’ll fall for you when you fall through the cracks No matter where you go I’ll track you down and follow your tracks No matter where you go I wish I was somewhere I wish I was anywhere If I could be anywhere I wish I were with you I wish I were with you Here we go Carrying on with the show And what I miss the most We’re heading for the coast You know I wish I was somewhere I wish I was anywhere Now that you’re gone I wish I were with you

When the silent treatment gets so loud it’s buzzing in my head Your lips are moving, tells I should be somewhere else instead Ooh, take a chance on today She said she was a mermaid She said she liked horses And then the silence finally breaks You took all you could take There’s no one there So you try to minimize it Then you try to compromise it No one really, really, really cares In the city streets are filled with sheets of raindrops filled with bile The silence is so deafening it somehow makes me smile Ooh, take a chance on tonight But she said she was a mermaid She said she liked horses She said she loved unicorns I’d never bet on the dragon When the silence finally breaks You took all you could take No one cares And still you try to minimize it Then you try to compromise it No one’s really, really, really there When the ice melts off the lake and it reflects on what is fake And you’re skating somewhere, swimming I was losing every race Ooh, one stolen moment might turn out right She said she was a mermaid She said she liked horses Never bet on the unicorn Never bet on the dragon When the silence finally breaks You find out just what’s fake There’s no one there So you try to minimize it Then you try to compromise it Cause no one really, really, really cares

Don’t you ever wanna leave me alone? Don’t you ever wanna watch my back? Can’t you ever even leave it alone? You don’t ever wanna walk my path You never see me when I’m keeping it together You only see me when I’m falling apart Got a feeling, a hopped up feeling It aint worth stealin’ cause I’m givin’ it away to everyone Are you ever gonna leave it at home? Would you ever make me swallow my pride? Would you ever try to spit me out? Would you ever stop and wonder why? I could see it if we never got together I would never find my place in the sun Got a feeling, a hopped up feeling It aint worth stealin’ cause I’m givin’ it away to everyone Drugs are a substitute for love And love is a substitute for Nothing at all And drugs are a substitute for love And love is a substitute for nothing at all Nothing at all Nothing’s going to come between us now Nothing’s going to make me change my mind If I never ever see you again Nothing’s ever going to take away my good time You never see me when I’m keeping it together You only see me when I’m falling apart Got a feeling, a hopped up feeling It ain’t worth stealin’ cuz I’m givin’ it away to everyone Got a feeling, a hopped up feeling Got a feeling, a hopped up feeling Got a feeling, a hopped up feeling Got a feeling, a hopped up feeling Got a feeling, a hopped up feeling Got a feeling, a hopped up feeling

Silly Things 03:51
I’ve done a lot of silly things I’ve found out just what trouble brings You used to wear my silly ring While I listened to my ears ring I’ve done a lot of silly things I used to think that I was cool Break each and every single rule Now all the rules are just the same It’s just a silly game I used to do a lot of things And when I fail, I will fail without you And my mistakes I’ll always answer to And if I cared, anymore To see it like the truth I’ve done a lot of silly things And I know just what trouble brings I’ve done a lot of silly things I used to like the way you walk You used to like the way I talk I used to do a lot of things I used to think that I could sing I’ve done a lot of silly things You used like the way I moved You used to think that I was smooth And if I ever had a chance I would ask you out again I’ve done a lot of stupid things And when I fail, I will fail without you I’ve been let down, oh so many times No one to blame, but myself To keep from getting down I’ve done a lot of stupid things And I know just what trouble brings I’ve done a lot of silly things I’ve done a lot of silly things Now I know just what trouble brings You used to wear my silly ring I’ve done a lot of stupid things I’ve done a lot of silly things But when I play, I will play without you It’s every man and woman for themselves I feel I’ve learned the hard way To put you before myself I’ve done a lot of silly things I’ve done a lot of stupid shit And I’m still tryin’ to deal with it
